Minot FD extinguishes Valley Street home fire

A fire and small explosion damaged a home on Minot’s Valley Street on Tuesday evening.

The Minot Fire Department was called to 519 Valley Street at 9:20 p.m. for a fire with a possible explosion. Upon arrival, fire crews found a home converted into three living units with smoke and fire coming from the lower level. Crew members made entry into the basement and were able to extinguish the fire, while other firefighters searched the home for possible occupants. All occupants had exited the structure prior to the Fire Department’s arrival.

With the fire extinguished, crews ventilated the structure and searched for signs of fire in other areas of the home. The home was secured, and firefighters were still at the scene as of early Wednesday afternoon to conduct fire watch.

The Minot Fire Department and North Dakota Fire Marshal’s Office have investigated the fire and determined it to be caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials. The explosion was determined to have been caused by a small propane torch that ignited during the fire.
